Sian Ka'an
The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is a wondrous area home to thousands of species of flora and fauna. Measuring half a million hectares and covering all possible scenarios: Tropical forests, mangroves, marshes, palm savannah, cenotes and coral reef beaches.
It creates a living place for a wide array of animals: Jaguars, crocodiles, pumas, ocelots, tapirs, dolphins, iguana’s, gecko’s are only a few to name. In the sky you can find over 300 species of birds flying, including pelicans and eagles.
Sian Ka’an is the biggest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean and the third biggest Biosphere of Mexico. The name comes from the indigeous people who called it Sian Ka’an, meaning ‘Where the sky is born’. And was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
Please note that this area may be affected by weather patterns that cause the influx of seaweed at the beach in Tulum and Sian Ka'an.
